Stem Cells and the Inflammatory Process

Tonight we are going to briefly cover the topic of stem cells and the inflammatory process. The word inflammation comes from the Latin inflammatio, which means “to set on fire.” Most people associate it with skin that becomes red, painful and swollen after they get a bug bite or a splinter. Those are common symptoms of acute inflammation.

The inflammatory response is a normal process, and an important mechanism for health; without it, wounds and tissues would not heal. But as with most physiological functions, it is vital that there is a balance. Unfortunately, inflammation that becomes chronic is one of the most troublesome processes in the body.

Chronic inflammation causes significant disruption of the normal functions of cells and – unlike acute inflammation – is usually silent, invisible and persistent. We can’t see it or feel it, but it can cause a host of health-related problems that plague today’s society.

Why Adult Stem Cells?

For the last several weeks we have been talking about human Stem Cells in general and honing the discussions down to Adult Stem Cells in particular.  This week we are focusing on why Adult Stem Cells are important in our body and what we can do to improve our overall health with Adult Stem Cells.

As discussed last week, bone marrow stem cells have the ability of becoming any type of cell in the body.  Since these adult stem cells are prevalent in the bone marrow and seem to be released into the body when the body is in need, it stands to reason that these particular adult stem cells constitute the natural renewal system in the human body. 

When a part of the body experiences some type of stress (either environmental or physical, that portion of the body releases specific messengers into the blood that is then transported to the bone marrow.  These messengers provide information for the bone marrow to release adult stem cells into the circulatory system.  Once the stem cells are released into the blood stream they travel to the area in need and begin to turn into the cell that needs repair or replacement.

Once the stem cells arrive at the area in need, they begin to multiply in order to amplify the process of repair.  That is when the adult stem cells become functional cells of the tissue or muscle in need.  Every adult stem cell has the potential of becoming a few thousand specific tissue cells.  It is through this natural process of renewal that your body maintains optimal health.

Overview of Stem Cell Health

In our last posting we reviewed the different types of Stem Cells that can be found in the human body.  Today we are going to focus on the Adult Stem Cells.   As we talked about before, Adult Stem Cells can be found in the body after birth.  Adult Stem Cells can be found in both humans and animals.  The largest concentration of Adult Stem Cells can be found in the bone marrow. 

Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells, which means that when needed, they can turn into any other type of cell in the human body.  What is also very useful about adult stem cells is that like the embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells can replicate themselves indefinitely and are abundant in the body throughout the natural life-cycle.  Because of that, the use of adult stem cells in research and tests is far less controversial than that of the embryonic stem cells. 

Since we all have adult stem cells in our body, the next question would be what do those adult stem cells have to do?  The most current scientific research on adult stem cells is that since they are undifferentiated cells, when the body needs a cell to be repaired or replaced, a message is sent out to the system to release an adult stem cell and have it sent to the area in need.  All the cells in our body have a specific life-span, from days to months and at some point in time those cells will naturally die.  The current research implies that the adult stem cells are responsible for replacing those cells to keep the body going. 

Our adult stem cells are designed to naturally repair and replace the broken or dying cells in our body.  The problem is that as we encounter more toxins, our cells become stressed faster, and we then appear to age faster because the cells cannot be regenerated as rapidly.  When there is stress or injury to the cells (as in exposure to toxins) chemical messengers are released into the blood system, signalling the body to release more adult stem cells into the blood stream to be delivered to the area in need.  Once the adult stem cells locate the area in need, they attach themselves to that area and begin turning into the type of cell that has to be replaced. 

This act of replacing damaged cells is what keeps us in optimal health.  The latest scientific studies are currently showing that adult stem cells are part of the body’s natural healing system.  There was a double-blind, placebo controlled crossover study published in the peer-reviewed medical journal, Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine which indicates what an increase in circulating adult stem cells can be linked to increased regeneration of cells in the body.  In a somewhat similar situation, the Olathe Animal Hospital in Kansas has made some ground breaking procedures with adult stem cell therapy.  They were able to extract adult stem cells from the fatty tissue in a dog, have it processed and ultimately replace those extracted adult stem cells back into the injured area of the dog.  To date the dog has experienced less pain and is able to move around easier than prior to the procedure.  Follow the link for an overview of the procedure and the results.

Stem Cell Basics

This week we are going to review what stem cells are and why we need them.  We will then carry the conversation on to the different types of stem cells and what we can do to maximize the effects of our own stem cells. 

There are several different types of stem cells in the human system.  Generally stem cells are a type of cell that is able to divide asymmetrically into two daughter cells that are not exactly alike.  The majority of the cells in our body cannot do that.  Stem cells also have the ability to turn into different types of cells and tissues.   Stem cells can ultimately re-create just about any tissue or organ in the human body.  Stem cells can essentially repair tissues in the human body that would not be able to repair itself. 

The fact that stem cells can create any cell or tissue in the body can become a huge advantage if for instance there was a need to replace or repair neural cells in the brain or repair the spinal cord.  You have probably heard about all the research with embryonic stem cells and the potential that can be in repairing spinal cord injuries.  Scientists have not yet been able to repair spinal cord injuries, but there has been significant work in that area.  Another advantage that stem cells have is that they can replace cells that were damaged during chemotherapy.  The stem cells adapt to the affected area, whether it is damaged skin, muscle, organs or brain. 

There has been a lot of news, both positive and negative about stem cells and stem cell therapy and research.  Much of the negative press is related to the research connected with embryonic stem cells.  These stem cells are extracted directly from a human embryo.  You cannot harvest cells from the embryo and have the embryo continue to live.  The embryonic stem cells can be kept alive indefinitely, and can double in number every 2-3 days.  These are not the only type of stem cells that are in the human body. 

Stem cells can also be harvested from the umbilical cord, and are referred to as cord cells.  These stem cells are extracted from the umbilical cord after it has been removed from the baby and mother.  These can be stored indefinitely in case they may be needed for the child down the road.   These cord cells can also be used by either the mother or father.  The problem with the collecting cord cells is that you have to have a child in order to get those stem cells.

There is yet another type of stem cell that is in the human body.  These are called adult stem cells.  Adult stem cells are not only found in adult humans, but are found in children too.  These adult stem cells are located in our bone marrow.  Up until lately, the only way to extract adult stem cells required going into the bone marrow to get them.  This can be a painful to the person and damaging to the bone marrow.  Adult stem cells are superior to both the umbilical cor and embryonic stem cells because the adult stem cells are plentiful, there would also be an exact DNA match so the body’s immune system would never reject its own adult stem cells.

In prior blogs we discussed the benefits of the STEMTech products and the benefits of the MonaVie product line.  It has come to my attention that there is a question as to ‘why offer both products?’.  This week’s blog will cover why we offer both STEMTech and MonaVie and reiterate the benefits of diversifying your product lines.
